Getting Around in Shenzhen

The Shenzhen metro, managed by the MTR in Hong Kong, is the most easy way to get around in Shenzhen.  There are currently 8 lines covering most areas of the city and the Bao’an International Airport.  There are announcements in 3 languages: Mandarin, Cantonese (local dialect) and English on the train.  Ticket machines are also in Chinese and English.  Please note a number of ticket machines accept small notes (CNY5.00) only.

Please click here for Shenzhen Metro website (English), where you can find the metro map.   Please do plan ahead when you want to travel on metro, as there may not be English speaking staff at the stations to assist.

Taxi is also available in Shenzhen.  They are metered and you can ask for a receipt at the end of the journey.  The most popular ones are the red and yellow taxi which operate in urban and suburban area.  There are surcharge for night drive (after 2300 hrs), long distance (over 25km) and handling fee for travel with lugguage.  Please note only cash is accepted and prepare a card with name of your destination in Chinese, as many drivers may not speak English.
